the world would be little more than a UV-Vis Spectrum
as seen through fogged-up goggles and stuffy lab coats
concocted in a lab
an excess of oxytocin and octopamine
love would simply be 4-(2-aminoethyl)benzene-1,2-diol
it fluoresces at 450 nanometers
a deep blue color
nothing more
but love is red
unless Taylor Swift wants to change her song
and love is 4-(2-aminoethyl)benzene-1,2-diol
and that doesn’t rhyme
and so the chemist retreats
back to the lab
Sierra Carnegie, the poor chemist listed, is a senior at SOU, majoring in Chemistry as well as Environmental Science and Policy. The piece was created in the few minutes available between labs, lab reports, and exams. It is but a brief, humorous commentary on the life of SOU’s scientific community, wherein the students never really leave the lab, and spend their excess time (if they have any) doing biochemistry and organic synthesis problems in the empty classrooms.
